Both colors harness light in very special and visually striking ways, especial when hit by direct sunlight. Best enjoyed with your favorite drink or cocktail!

About the special properties of each color…

Neodymium is produced by the inclusion of neodymium oxide, a rare-earth metal, in the glass melt. Light transmitted through neodymium glass shows unusually sharp frequencies. In daylight or incandescent light, neodymium glass appears lavender, but it appears pale blue under fluorescent lighting and greenish under trichromatic lighting. The color changes resemble the one of Alexandrite gemstones.

Opaline Pink glass is made with the inclusion of Erbium, another rare-earth metal which has rose colored salts and optical amplification properties. Opaline, is made using calcium phosphate during the mixing process to create its distinctive iridescent milkiness. Opaline looks transparent until it is cooled down and reheated, which causes crystallization that stops light from flowing, thus translating the glassblowing process and our touch quite literally onto the areas that become white. Its glow casts gold shadows.

Penland 2024 Winter Residency Drinking Glasses are now LIVE 🥂

We’re thrilled to share some exciting news to kick off the new year! Earlier this year, we were honored to receive a Distinguished Artist Fellowship at Penland School of Crafts in North Carolina. During our two-week residency we immersed ourselves in creating new work and connecting with an incredible community of talented artists.

As part of our time at Penland, we explored a series of experimental drinking glasses that we’re excited to release. All the designs are pictured above. These cups are truly one-of-a-kind, crafted using Penland’s exclusive Neodymium and Opaline Pink glass color recipes. Two very magical colors that change hues according to the light around them.

Only 9 cups are available, and each one carries the spirit of creativity and craftsmanship that defined our residency.
The glasses drop on The Third Rooom website this Saturday, February 1, 2025, at 9 AM EST.

Whirlpool Candle Holder ~ A solid candle holder made by gathering molten glass and shaping it using only gravity and centrifugal force. The solid mass of glass is then indented in the middle to fit a standard taper candle, creating a nature pool that cradles the melted wax, preventing it from dripping on the table. A sculptural accent that harnesses light.
