Three friends and NJIT students have launched MechSense Labs, a startup developing AI-powered emergency rescue technology, their first product a robotic rover designed to operate autonomously in dangerous or hard-to-reach environments.
The team placed second overall at NJIT's 2026 MakeNJIT hardware hackathon and will spend the summer at the RevIthaca hardware accelerator program to advance their concepts.

NJIT celebrated its undergraduate Class of 2026 at Prudential Center in Newark on May 22, with New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill receiving an honorary doctorate, delivering the commencement address which highlighted her distinguished career in military service, law, and public leadership.
The ceremony brought together undergraduates, families, faculty, and university leaders to congratulate bachelor's degree recipients from across NJIT's colleges and schools.

NJIT's Hillier College of Architecture and Design has recognized Jessica Dineen, a first-generation college graduate from Bronx, NY, who transitioned from engineering into interior design, a discipline that balanced her passion for creativity alongside analytical problem-solving.
After graduation, Dineen will start her career as a junior designer at Fogarty Finger in Tribeca.

NJIT's Newark College of Engineering has awarded Samantha Montalbine at its 28th Annual Salute to Engineering Excellence, including the Outstanding Senior Award for Mechanical and Industrial Engineeringand a 4.0 GPA.
Montalbine plans on joining Valcor as a Level 1 Design Engineer, with plans to stay connected to NJIT as a young alumna and eventually return to further her education.

NJIT computer engineering graduate Natalia Peña, a Albert Dorman Honors College scholarship, recipient of the Diane and Joel Bloom Scholarship, and a Fulbright semi-finalist, spoke at the annual Scholarship Luncheon event, where students and donors have a chance to meet.
Peña spoke about Joel and Diane Bloom, whose scholarship supported her and encouraged her to pursue graduate studies in human-computer interaction.

Design Senior Carolyn Toledo is recognized by NJIT's Hillier College of Architecture for her work bridging visual art and technology, with her experience spanning digital design, UI/UX, and AI-driven motion capture research with accessibility-focused design.
Toledo plans to continue building her career in the Newark area following graduation.
