Exciting things are happening in the Christina School District!
Christina has been awarded $652,691 through Delaware's Bridge to Practice program to help improve early literacy instruction for the 2026–27 school year. This funding will expand science-of-reading training (LETRS) for teachers and continue developing principals and teacher-leaders through the Early Literacy Leadership Academy (ELLA).
This investment builds on the progress already underway, as we have already seen impressive improvements in reading and math at schools like Thurgood Marshall Elementary and Brookside Elementary.
Giving our young learners a strong literacy foundation is essential to their long-term success, which is one of the many reasons why investing in early education is so important. I'm sure this funding will help Christina build on the great work they're already doing.

Fire Prevention Week (October 4 - 10) reminds us that a few simple safety steps can make a big difference in protecting our families and homes.

This year’s NFPA theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is Superpower,” focuses on charging phones, e-bikes, and other devices safely.

Please take a few minutes to check your charging habits, use the right chargers, and never charge devices under a pillow or on a bed. Fire safety is something we all need to take seriously, and these small steps can help keep our families and communities safe.

Congratulations to all of Delaware’s 2027 Teacher of the Year nominees! Thank you for all you do to make a difference in the classroom and for the dedication you bring to your students every day.

Delaware will celebrate 20 outstanding educators on Oct. 13 and announce which one will serve as the state’s 2027 Teacher of the Year.

Districts and the Delaware Charter Network nominated the teachers during the 2026 calendar year. The nominees were recognized for their ability to inspire a love of learning, their exemplary professional qualities and their dedication to teaching.

The selection process begins with a five-essay application. Five Delaware Department of Education staff members and five former state teachers of the year independently review the applications. A former state teacher of the year and a department staff member then observe each candidate in the classroom. An independent panel of judges from outside the department considers the application and observation scores, along with a recorded presentation from each nominee, before recommending one teacher to the Secretary of Education.

The teacher selected as Delaware’s 2027 Teacher of the Year will also become the state’s nominee for the national Teacher of the Year program, a project of the Council of Chief State School Officers in partnership with the Voya Foundation.

Through action of the General Assembly, the state Teacher of the Year will receive a $5,000 grant for the educational benefit of their students and a $3,000 personal grant. Each of the other nominees will receive a $2,000 state grant.

The Oct. 13 celebration at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover will begin with a social hour at 5 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. The Teacher of the Year announcement will close the evening. The event will be livestreamed following the dinner portion of the evening with an estimated start time of 7:15 p.m. A grant from Voya Financial and support from the Delaware General Assembly fund the award ceremony.

Meet the 2027 District/Charter Teachers of the Year at the link in comments.

Yesterday we held a special ceremonial session to commemorate the 250th anniversary of our country.
It was great to join my colleagues and other guest in the New Castle Court House Museum, where our first ever General Assembly met in 1776. So much of our nation’s early history has happened right here in Delaware and I am grateful to those who organized today’s event to remind us of that.
