As a new school year begins, many families are navigating changing schedules, new routines, and unfamiliar environments. While these transitions can be exciting, they can also feel overwhelming, and that's okay.
Remember that small steps matter. Building routines gradually, allowing time for adjustment, and celebrating progress along the way can help make the transition smoother for everyone.
Remember to:
💙Give yourself grace as new routines develop.
💙Focus on consistency rather than perfection.
💙Prepare for sensory needs whenever possible.
💙Celebrate each success, no matter how small.

Yesterday, Autism Delaware was grateful to be present at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for the redesigned Glasgow Park playground in New Castle County. The County reached out to us a year ago to better understand the needs of the community we serve. We were happy to offer feedback prior to the park’s design being finalized to help, in some small way, better accommodate our families. While we will always advocate for inclusive, safe spaces to exist for those we serve, we also recognize that not every park or activity fits every need or family.
The new park represents the County’s efforts to encourage inclusive play and offers features for children with various disabilities, including those with autism. There are educational features throughout, signage complete with PEC imagery, and a special, dedicated area for those on the spectrum to take a break if needed. We hope the decisions that have been made will encourage others to come together in a new way and share a space of opportunity.
If you have questions about the new playground, please reach out to New Castle County’s Parks Department. We hope that the new playground will serve as a benefit to all and encourage you to visit should you feel comfortable doing so.

School is starting soon. And if your child has a disability, he or she has the right to a public education with the appropriate special services that meet your child’s specific needs. To help you get started, our newest blog post provides overviews of
• the educational evaluation process, which assesses a child’s needs as a student,
• the process for creating a student’s individualized education program (IEP), and
• some of your rights in the IEP process.
