We are deeply saddened by the passing of Akiko Tsuruga — not only a brilliant organist, but also a radiant presence in so many communities. Over the years, AAPI Jazz Fest was honored to feature Akiko in numerous performances, including as a headliner at last year’s festival. Her warmth and positivity shone both on and off the bandstand, and that spirit was always reflected in her music.
In an interview at our festival, Akiko was asked about the growing number of Asian jazz musicians. She simply shared how happy she was to see more Asians, especially women, thriving and performing in the community.
We encourage everyone to listen to her recordings and read the many tributes being shared by fellow musicians and arts organizations. Akiko leaves behind a legacy of joy, inspiration, and music that will be recognized by many communities, including our own.
Our deepest condolences go out to her family, friends, and all who were touched by her life and music.

Producer of AAPI Jazz Fest
