On this National School Day of Non-Violence and Peace, we pledge to work towards a more peaceful world for all. We pledge to promote non-violence, respect for human rights, and understanding of different cultures and perspectives. We will combat hate, discrimination, and violence. We pledge to be active citizens in our City of Newark, and to use our voices and actions to promote peace and create a more just and equitable society. I also pledge to address the underlying issues that contribute to gun violence, such as poverty, racism, and a lack of access to mental health resources. We pledge to stand with survivors of gun violence and to honor the memory of those who have been lost. Together, we can create a future of peace and harmony for all people.

UCEDC is currently accepting applications for its fourth round of Entrepreneurship as a Second Chance (ESC).

ESC offers formerly incarcerated or court-involved individuals the opportunity to explore re-entry into society through business ownership. In addition to intensive entrepreneurial training, two years of one-on-one mentoring, and business plan development, ESC provides participants with the necessary tools for success.

In the first three sessions, UCEDC had 31 returning citizens complete the program. Their businesses ranged from Lauren Bianco's Phoenix Rising, which aims to help returning citizens like herself, to Ronald Kinston's trucking company.

When asked about the Entrepreneurship as a Second Chance initiative and what it meant to him, graduate Ron Kinston said, "the program is definitely beneficial because it covers every aspect of running a business. I don't care if you've been in business for ten years or you're just starting; there's something you can get out of the program."
