🎧 NEW on the Solidarity Is This podcast: Solidarity as Public Memory

Our guest, Satsuki Ina () joins co-host Deepa Iyer () and shows us how to build solidarity from a national tragedy.

During World War II, the US government forcibly removed and incarcerated more than 125,000 Japanese Americans. On the northern Great Plains, in Bismarck, North Dakota, a military post known as Fort Lincoln (“Snow Country Prison) detained 1,850 Japanese Americans, including Itaru Ina, Satsuki’s father.

Today, the former camp is part of United Tribes Technical College, and earlier this fall, Native and Japanese American community members and allies gathered for a dedication of the Snow Country Prison Japanese American Memorial. Tune in to hear Satsuki’s incredible solidarity story about how this Memorial came to be. When we are under attack from outside forces, this can sometimes manifest in internal divisions within and across movement ecosystems. What can conflict teach us about building deeper solidarity? What wisdom have our movements gained about moving through conflict together? How do we build organizations strong enough to hold connection and disagreement?  In this critical conversation, we’ll explore the challenging terrain of movement conflict - from strategic disagreements to interpersonal conflicts, from political differences to generational divides.

Through real examples, practical tools, and lived experiences, this State of Solidarity panel discussion will examine how movements have transformed moments of conflict into foundations for deeper trust, sharper analysis, and transformative solidarity. Register at the link in our bio.
