“A majority of our small businesses in Massachusetts either work with no legal status, use English as a second language, have no or low credit, or cannot be flexible with their finances. These are the small businesses that we are helping because they need our help the most,” shares Senior Vice President of Lending in New England, Andrea Ierace.

One of our core markets at Ascendus is Massachusetts. In the first quarter of 2024, we lent $1.4 million to small businesses there. Not only did we lend significant capital, we ensured that this capital was directly serving those who need our help the most. Clients like Kai, in Boston. Read her story here:

Ascendus’s first client was Uvalda, a Hispanic immigrant woman who took a $500 microloan and turned it into a thriving restaurant franchise. Since 1991, Ascendus has continued to provide true microloans, with an average loan size of under $50,000, and has not changed its mission or the populations it seeks to serve.

At $100 million in outstanding loan portfolio under service, Ascendus has reached a historic lending record, serving more clients than ever before in the hardest to serve communities. Clients like Uvalda.

83% of Ascendus’s small business owners are entrepreneurs of color, the majority of whom are Black or Latinx, and 73% are low- to moderate-income. These clients not only have access to affordable capital and technical assistance, they are positioned to build their resiliency and access to opportunity. See the impact of an Ascendus loan:
