Transilient
A journey through the heart of your story. #MoreThanTrans
Transilient is a traveling photo and interview-based project.
Transilient is a trans-led media collective training community artists, especially trans people in Western NC, to create nonfiction stories rooted in care and collaboration that affirm, connect, and celebrate people marginalized by gender, race, class, se We candidly document transgender and gender non-conforming people in their day-to-day lived realities using only their voices. Meet Daniel, aka Blue Ridge Parkgay.
A q***r Appalachian singer-songwriter based in Asheville, NC, Daniel creates music that feels right at home in the world of Fixin’ to Stay. Blending the rich tradition of Southern storytelling with honest, and joyful narratives, his songs capture what it means to build a life, a community, and a sense of belonging in the South.
When we met Daniel, he performed his grant-winning single, “Where I’m From,” a powerful reflection on identity, place, and q***r power.
Artists like Daniel remind us that q***r stories have always been part of Appalachia’s past, present, and future.
Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight the South’s LGBTQ community, places, and stories while filming our documentary, Fixin’ to Stay.

Meet Azrael Máel Eóin. Azrael
Acrobat. Artist. Southerner.
Splitting time between Asheville, NC, and Memphis, TN, Azrael uses movement to explore what words sometimes can’t. Their latest work examines the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, asking what it means to stay, rebuild, and carry grief in a changing landscape.
As Fixin’ to Stay follows stories across the Southeast and focuses on Western North Carolina and Memphis, we’re lucky to have met Azrael, whose work helps us understand q***r and trans power in the South beyond headlines and statistics. Through aerial performance and physical storytelling, he is exploring how communities adapt after disaster and what remains when the floodwaters recede.
The story of the South is not just one of survival. It’s one of creativity, connection, and finding new ways to hold each other up.

Southerners aren’t the enemy. Throwing us away means throwing away some of the most vulnerable and marginalized people in the country. We’ll still continue to fight back and do the work regardless but hating the South means your politics are myopic,to say it kindly. There must be solidarity with Southern people if we are to ever live in a country that stands up against fascist politicians and billionaires, where all people have bodily autonomy, where racial justice looks like actual justice and freedom, a world where trans and q***r people aren’t demonized, where rich pedophiles are held accountable, where the working class can survive, and we become something more than “climate resilient” and live in reciprocity with nature.
