What Is the iTrace?
The iTrace is a unique ophthalmic diagnostic tool that uses proprietary ray-tracing technology to provide an objective simulation of a patient’s eyesight, separating visual performance between the cornea and the lens. For many years’ cataract surgeons have been making incisions and removing cloudy cataractous lenses using instruments and blades. Today, Dr. Lippman is able to perform many of these critical steps in the cataract surgery process using an image guided femtosecond laser; thereby making cataract surgery safer and more precise.
After creating a high resolution image of the eye using optical coherence tomography, the laser then performs surgical tasks with greater precision than hand held blades, allowing for both improved safety, comfort, and precision during surgery, as well as reduced healing time afterward. The laser also treats preexisting corneal astigmatism. This takes cataract surgery to a whole new, higher level of precision.
Astigmatism is caused by an irregular curvature of the cornea or the lens, and it hampers the ability to see fine detail. Astigmatism affects your vision at all distances and is a separate vision problem from cataracts. Patients have a choice of treatments, including the AcrySof IQ Toric that treats pre-existing corneal astigmatism at the same time that it corrects cataracts. The monofocal lens, which does not correct existing vision problems such as astigmatism you may still experience blurred and distorted vision if you have astigmatism; this is because it cannot correct preexisting corneal astigmatism. High- quality vision cannot be regained unless the astigmatism is also corrected.
