A popular venue for generations of locals and visitors was the Casa Loma restaurant, bar and motel on False River Dr. It was founded by C.M. Aldridge in 1947 and successively operated by the Cranfield, Didier and Pourciau families. After closing ca1980, the motel was demolished, the main building moved to Hospital Rd. near Portage Canal, and the old property redeveloped into residential lots.
Casa Loma: Spanish for "House on the Hill"

Details of the 1899 vintage Lower Chenal swing bridge (replaced in recent years), the pivot mechanism of which allowed for passage of small steamboats and barges until ca 1910. The boat traffic followed False River and the Lower Chenal as far as a freight elevator at the Mississippi River levee at Hermitage.
