The Florida Mosquito Control Association (FMCA) dedicates April 19th – 25th to learning about mosquitoes, prevention, and reducing the risks of mosquito transmitted diseases.

Sarasota County Mosquito Management is starting out Florida Mosquito Week with some mosquito biology and the Fascinating Fascicle! Did you know that mosquito mouthparts have six different tools they use to help them bite prey? That’s right – it’s not just a simple straw, but instead a complex network of needle-like tools that work to cut skin, hold tissue, drink blood and spit out saliva. The whole mouthpart is known as a proboscis, but these internal structures are known as a fascicle.

All these parts work together seamlessly to quickly nip the target and take blood for necessary protein – and sometimes transmit disease!
