Common Snapping Turtles (Chelydra serpentina) are omnivorous and eat a wide variety of plants and animals. Their diet is so varied that studies of stomach contents by scientists have been difficult to draw conclusions from, with some researching claiming that Snapping Turtles seem to eat any organic matter available. It is known that young snappers, who have a preference for smaller streams, are largely carnivorous and subsist on a diet of aquatic insect larva like stoneflies, mayflies, and dragonflies, small fish like darters, chubs, and shiners, frogs and salamanders, and other small invertebrates. During the early spring, before most aquatic and terrestrial plants are available, adult Snapping Turtles are also generally carnivorous and can be found wandering on land. As the summer arrives and plants are plentiful, adult Snapping Turtles will eat mostly aquatic vegetation. Adults can reach over 100 years in age and 75lbs in weight.

Turtles haven't changed significantly for 200 million years. That amount of time is almost incomprehensible, but consider this: 200 million years ago, Africa and South America were still connected, as were Europe and North America. Dinosaurs did roam the earth alongside Turtles, at least until about 66 million years ago when a 30 mile wide meteor hit the planet, creating a massive extinction event. The turtles lived on. One million years ago, an ice sheet spread across the Northern hemisphere. The glaciers receded, then crept back southward - repeating this process multiple times within the last million years. Turtles, of course, survived it all.
