π§ββοΈβ¨ WHY WE DO IT WEDNESDAYS β¨π§ββοΈ
This week we're talking about climbing!
To most people, climbing just looks like kids having fun on the playground. And while it definitely is fun, it's also providing so many opportunities for learning, growth, and sensory input.
One of the biggest reasons kids are drawn to climbing is because of the sensory feedback it provides. As children pull themselves up, hang on, and navigate different surfaces, their muscles and joints are working hard. This gives the brain important information about where the body is in space and can be especially helpful for children who are constantly seeking movement and heavy work activities.
Here's why we love climbing:
πͺ Strength
Climbing helps build strength throughout the arms, shoulders, hands, legs, and core. Kids are using their whole body to move and support themselves.
π§ Problem Solving
Every climb is different. Children have to figure out where to place their hands and feet, how to get around obstacles, and what their next move will be.
π€Έ Coordination
Climbing requires both sides of the body to work together while helping kids practice controlled, purposeful movements.
π Confidence
There is nothing quite like the feeling of making it to the top! Climbing gives children opportunities to challenge themselves, take safe risks, and build confidence in their abilities.
π Sensory Input
Climbing provides lots of heavy work through the muscles and joints, which can help support body awareness, regulation, and attention. For many children, climbing simply feels good because their bodies are getting the input they need.
So the next time your child heads straight for the climbing structure at the playground, remember they aren't just playing. They're building strength, confidence, coordination, and body awareness one climb at a time.
Because here, play always has a purpose. π

π¦ WHY WE DO IT WEDNESDAYS π¦
A sensory bin filled with rice, beans, and dinosaur toys may look simple, but activities like this help build so many important foundational skills through PLAY! π
Sensory bins provide children with opportunities to explore, create, problem solve, and strengthen important developmental skills in a fun and engaging way.
Hereβs the βwhyβ behind todayβs dinosaur sensory bin:
π Sensory Processing & Regulation
Exploring textures like rice and beans helps children process sensory input while increasing tolerance to different tactile experiences. Sensory play can also be calming and organizing for the nervous system, helping support attention and regulation during play and learning tasks.
β Fine Motor Development
Scooping, digging, grasping, pouring, and picking up small dinosaur toys strengthens the muscles in the hands and fingers needed for everyday tasks like handwriting, dressing, feeding, and manipulating small objects.
π Visual Scanning & Attention
Searching through the bin to find hidden dinosaurs encourages visual attention and scanning skills while also supporting sustained engagement during play.
π¦ Imaginative Play
Pretend play with dinosaurs encourages creativity, language development, sequencing, and social interaction while making learning feel FUN.
At We Rock the Spectrum, we love using play-based activities to help children build the foundational skills needed for greater independence and confidence in everyday life. π
