Flori Roberts Black History Moment
Prior to 1966, Black women could not find makeup and skincare in Department Stores. In 1966, Florence Lord Roberts founded Flori Roberts Inc. in Lakewood, N.J. Throughout the year, she toted her wares to conventions and black-owned salons, with no success. Then, in 1967, she began making the rounds of department stores. ''Buyers would say, 'Our black customers use the cosmetics we already have,' or 'Blacks don't shop in department stores,' '' she recalls. Roberts was convinced that if black consumers were not coming in, it was because they felt unwelcome.
Her breakthrough came that summer, when she finally placed her line at Bamberger's (now Macy's) in Newark NJ. Black women flocked to the Flori Roberts counter. ''They couldn't believe we had foundations and lipsticks and eyeshadows in colors that were right for them,'' says Marion Boswell, a black woman who became Roberts's first beauty advisor. Strong sales at Bamberger's helped Roberts get into Burdine's in Miami, Burdine's led to Foley's in Houston and Flori Roberts Inc. began it's expansion into Department stores worldwide.
