The year was 2021.

During an online Super Smash Bros. Melee tournament, someone noticed pro player Hungrybox was using Bluetooth AirPods and warned him:

“You should switch to a wired headset. Bluetooth headphones add 12 frames of audio delay.”

12 frames.

At 60 FPS, that’s roughly 200 milliseconds between what you see and what you hear.

Hungrybox immediately took the AirPods out, switched to wired audio, and went on to win the match.

And the tournament.

For casual listening, that delay may not matter.

But in gaming, timing is everything.

Footsteps. Reloads. Ability sounds. Directional cues.

Audio often gives you information before anything appears on screen. Add 100–200ms of delay, and you’re reacting to outdated information.
