New Caney ISD Approves $244 Million Budget and Lower Tax Rate for 2026-27
New Caney ISD trustees have approved a balanced budget for the 2026-2027 fiscal year, with about $243.87 million in both revenue and spending. The largest portion of the budget, approximately $141.53 million, is allocated to instruction, which includes employee wages. The district is also budgeting about $22.12 million for facility maintenance and operations and $13.65 million for school leadership.
Trustees also approved a total tax rate of $1.2393 per $100 of property value, down from the current rate of $1.2552. District documents indicate the median homeowner could see a slightly lower annual NCISD tax bill despite a modest increase in median home values. Actual tax bills can still vary depending on property values, exemptions and appraisal changes. The new budget represents an increase of about $9.37 million compared with the district’s originally adopted 2025-2026 general fund budget.

New Caney Elementary Celebrates Ribbon Cutting at New Campus
New Caney ISD celebrated the ribbon cutting of the new, New Caney Elementary on August 17th, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of the community’s longtime schools. The new campus follows the closing of the original New Caney Elementary, which served generations of students, families and educators.
District leaders, staff, students, parents and community members gathered for the celebration. Student speakers Stella Rudolph and Emersyn Tharp also took part in the ceremony. The ribbon cutting officially welcomed the community into the new campus and celebrated the next generation of New Caney Elementary students.

Deputies Pull Theft Suspect From Burning Vehicle After New Caney Pursuit
The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office has released video of a pursuit that began after a reported theft at the Porter Walmart and ended in a fiery crash near FM 1485. According to MCSO, East Command deputies responded to a theft in progress and allegedly saw a suspect fleeing the store on foot with Walmart loss-prevention personnel following behind. The man reportedly entered a vehicle, refused to stop for a marked patrol unit and drove away from the area.
Authorities identified the driver as 53-year-old Michael BeBawi. MCSO said he allegedly traveled north on U.S. 69 at a high rate of speed before exiting at FM 1485. While attempting to turn eastbound, the vehicle reportedly crossed a curbed median, struck two signs, collided with another vehicle and then struck a Chase Bank sign before catching fire.
Deputies immediately attempted to reach BeBawi inside the burning vehicle. Because the driver-side door was reportedly jammed from the crash, one deputy entered through the passenger side and unlocked the opposite door, allowing deputies to pull BeBawi from the vehicle.
MCSO said the fire intensified and the vehicle began to explode shortly after the rescue. Deputies moved BeBawi farther from the scene, cleared patrol vehicles and opened access for responding fire and EMS crews. BeBawi is currently being held in the Montgomery County Jail on charges of Evading in a Vehicle and Theft. Texas DPS is investigating the crash.
An arrest and charge are allegations, and the case will proceed through the legal process.

Missing New Caney Teen Still Missing Months After April Disappearance
The search continues for 15-year-old Linda Fletes, who has been missing from New Caney since April 7th, 2026. Linda has now been missing for several months, and her family and investigators are continuing to ask the public for help. Anyone who may have seen Linda, spoken with her or has information about where she may be is encouraged to come forward.
Anyone with information should contact the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office. Please continue sharing Linda’s information and photo. Even a small detail could help investigators determine where she is. NCMEC case number: 2083441

Major Crash Reported in New Caney on Hwy. 59 Southbound Near Roman Forest Overpass
At 8:55 AM, a crash was reported on the southbound main lanes of Hwy. 59 near the Roman Forest overpass, between Hwy. 242 and FM 1485. The crash is reportedly on the left shoulder. Drivers traveling through the area should use caution, watch for emergency crews and expect delays.

New Caney's New HEB Centered Valley Ranch Commerce District Officially Breaks Ground
A major new phase of development is officially underway at Valley Ranch. The Signorelli Company recently joined community leaders, project partners and the Valley Ranch team for a groundbreaking ceremony celebrating the start of Commerce District.
The development is expected to bring a new HEB along with additional retail, dining, residential and commercial opportunities as Valley Ranch continues to expand. Developers say Commerce District is designed to add more places for residents to shop, dine, work and gather, with additional phases planned as the area continues to grow.

Dr. Miller Steps Into the Lunch Line at Porter High School to Serve Students
Dr. Miller traded the principal’s office for the cafeteria line, stepping in to help serve lunch to students. The moment gave students a chance to see their campus leadership in a different setting while Dr. Miller helped staff and connected with Spartans during the school day.
A simple example of leadership showing up wherever help is needed!

Tacos La Bala Planning New Location on FM 1485 in New Caney
A new Tacos La Bala restaurant is planned for New Caney at 20460 FM 1485, Suite A, according to a recent Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation filing. The project calls for a 2,482-square-foot restaurant, with construction currently expected to begin in September and wrap up by January 30th.
An official opening date has not yet been announced, and project details remain subject to change.
