How to get into Karting
Our latest podcast looks at how to get started, local tracks and licensing.
But also… how important it is to buy locally and support shops near the circuit.
When entering a new sport, you need to build a network. People to ask questions to, get help.
If you buy an unknown brand off marketplace then it can be hard to get help when you need it most!

What axle should I use in my kart?
Your karts rear axle plays a significant part in how much grip your Kart has.
If you’re sliding around corners go to a softer grade. This will help the rear of the chassis flex and generate rear grip.
When your kart is bouncing or hopping around corners, this is a sign your axle is too soft (creating too much flex). Go to a stiffer grade axle to keep the rear of the kart settled.
Where possible aim to start on a medium axle, as you have the biggest window to work with in either direction.

What a day of coaching looks like.
Start the day with a track walk.
Get a sense on the conditions, make sure track is safe and show the drivers where they should be driving.
From there I always let the drivers do session 1 basically on their own.
It’s better to see what kids ‘think’ they should be doing.
I can give them the answers but that isn’t coaching. And it also doesn’t help the driver when I’m not at the track (new track) with them.
After a session, this gives me an idea on areas we can work on. Whether that’s race lines, brake points, apexes, etc.
Once the driver has hit a plateau, it’s now a good time to use their data to reference off our team drivers. This breaks down the biggest deficiencies we can aim to improve on.
Bit by bit, we continue to practice, improve key areas and have an understanding on what to do at any track whether I’m there or not.

Why does my tyre look like this?
Drivers and Parents can pull their hair out when looking at their tyres.
It can be a combination of:
❌ Racing Line
❌ Tyre Pressures
Work on racing line first, then adjust pressures in 0.5psi increments (up & down) to find your optimal window.
1 year vs 1st time
This is what experience does for a driver.
‘Bum in seat’ as we call it is about learning the circuit, feeling the kart, experiencing G Forces and gaining confidence.
Some kids are better than others day 1. Does that mean it’ll be the same in 12 months? No.
Karting isn’t like other sports where you can continue to train at your house, it’s about laps on the circuit.
Next time you’re frustrated that your driver isn’t fast out of the box, remember it took me 3 years to be even remotely competitive.

Alfi’s 2nd place at the State Championships on the weekend didn’t JUST HAPPEN.
We’ve been working hard to build the foundations for 18 months.
From turning in early, drifting around corners, looking behind 50 times a lap & driving the wide lines, we’ve now got a quick little 8 year old who’s in contention most weeks.
A pole position, race win & fastest lap of the final is a huge improvement from last years same event finishing 17th at his home track.
