This week we’re highlighting a fascinating book for anyone interested in literary translation and the creative relationship between translators and authors:

📖 Surprised in Translation by Mary Ann Caws

In this thoughtful and engaging book, renowned translator and scholar Mary Ann Caws explores one of the most intriguing aspects of translation: the unexpected.

For Caws, the most exciting translations are often the ones that surprise us—those moments when translation moves away from strict imitation and instead opens new creative possibilities.

A rewarding day for our students and our program! ⚖️🌍

Professor Ramírez-Polo and two of our MA students recently visited The Legal Aid Society at their offices in Queens, where our students are currently completing their internship and final MA Practicum.

During the visit, they had the opportunity to:
👥 Meet the incredible team of interpreters and translators, as well as some of the attorneys
👀 Observe and shadow real interpreting and transcription assignments
🎧 Practice hands-on interpreting tasks in a professional setting

The Legal Aid team welcomed us with open arms. We left feeling inspired by the essential work they do and by the crucial role that translators and interpreters play in ensuring language access to justice for the Spanish-speaking community.

The multilingual team at Legal Aid also includes translators working in Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, and Russian, highlighting the importance of linguistic diversity in public service.

👏 Kudos to The Legal Aid Society for making language access a reality and for providing our students with such an incredible professional learning experience!

Yesterday, Professor Laura Ramírez, coordinator of the Translation & Interpreting Program and manager of , and Robert Esposito, president of , presented at the first annual Careers in World Languages Day at Hamilton High School West 🎓🌍

It was inspiring to speak with high school students about their career goals and how learning another language can open doors to exciting professional paths. Beyond boosting career opportunities, multilingualism also brings powerful cognitive, cultural, and social benefits 🧠✨

We explored careers in linguistics, education, translation and interpreting, international work, and even the military — showing just how many possibilities languages can unlock.

Rutgers was also represented by .global, who shared the many international opportunities available to students during their time at Rutgers ✈️🌎
