In our latest Focus Forward episode, number 75 (woo!), we’re wrapping up ADHD Awareness Month with a fun, creative conversation about Expressive Arts Coaching with Shayne Swift, a Beyond BookSmart Executive Function coach and life coach who incorporates creativity into her sessions to help her clients grow. Shayne is joined on the show by her client, Jamal Kirk, who told his story of how their exploration into creativity helped him find success at work with his colleagues and at home with his kids.

Shayne shares how drawing, journaling, and imagination can strengthen Executive Function skills and spark self-discovery. We also took a little detour to talk about music and DJing. And, Shayne even leads us through a hands-on reflection exercise you can try yourself! It was a fun conversation for the end of a fun month!

✨ A reminder that even as adults, we can have fun while we grow.

Not all disabilities are visible.
The sunflower symbol helps identify people with invisible disabilities. It's a quiet way to say, “I may need extra time, patience, or support.”

At Beyond BookSmart, our coaches support people every day with invisible diagnoses that impact Executive Functioning, such as ADHD, Autism, brain injuries, and more.
💛 A little understanding can make a big difference.

Have you tried saying "and" instead of "but"? Here's a great example of the power of "and".

Parenting is a beautiful contradiction where we often feel two things at once. We call these "AND" moments.

These challenging moments pull us in all directions, feeling both messy and beautiful, hard and worth it all at the very same time…

And without an understanding of what an "AND" moment is, we are at risk of feeling confused and/or not enough.

Here is a poster you can print and hang to remind yourself to connect these thoughts that sometimes feel like contradictions with an "AND" instead.

And if you’re new to generation, mindful, start with our EQ Quiz for parenting with connection. We will send you a personalized guidebook, based on your results, to get you some support for the journey.

This is a great explanation of the connection between co-regulation, interoception, and self-regulation!

Feeling so grateful for this incredible artwork created after my session at the Back to School Conference, hosted by the amazing Jayson Davies from OT Schoolhouse.

It captures such an important truth: Co-regulation builds interoception, and interoception builds self-regulation. When we shift from compliance-based approaches to interoception-based support, we foster curiosity, connection, and body trust.

Everyone’s experience is valid, and that’s where real growth happens. Thank you to everyone who joined me in exploring how interoception helps us notice, understand, and care for our bodies in affirming ways.

Better sleep starts before bedtime. 🌙 Create a calm, consistent evening routine—dim the lights, turn off screens, and do something relaxing like reading or stretching. Even small changes can help your brain slow down and signal it’s time to rest.

The negative narrative is a powerful force. How can you change it? Check out this post for some tips!

“Why do so many people with ADHD struggle with self-esteem?”

For many, years of hearing “try harder” or “pay attention” can turn into self-doubt and shame. But ADHD is not about effort—it’s a brain difference. Rebuilding confidence begins with self-compassion and recognizing your worth exactly as you are. 💙
