Update on NWS, health certificate requirements have already begun to change. Kentucky is now requiring 1) an import permits 2) a 72 hour health cert 3) another inspection within 24 hours upon arriving in Kentucky.

I am sure many other states will have similar changes coming. This is dynamic and I expect it so continue for a long time. Rolling with the punches.

Yesterday, New World Screwworm was officially reported in the Texas. Here are some quick notes on NWS and a fact sheet put together by the Equine Disease Communication Center and American Association of Practioners.

1) NWS does not cause wounds but infests pre-existing wounds and surgical sites
2) There are treatment options available including physical debridement and topical and/or systemic insecticides.
3) fly control is key for prevention
4) routine deworming also helps prevent NWS.

What to watch for:
Monitor any wound or surgical site for larva. If you see larva, contact your veterinarian.
Keep wounds covered.
For wounds that cannot be covered, apply SWAT or some other fly repellent around the wound.

We will continue to monitor developments. We began collecting supplies nearly a year ago in case NWS made it to Texas. We will be adjusting some of our treatment protocols to help prevent NWS in our patients.

Lance is our UPS man. He is a member of Freedom Equine and has been an apart of the family since we opened. If we have seen your horse, there is a near certain chance, Lance delivered the meds. He might also be the biggest Cowboys fan I know. He is a big reason we are successful. So happy for Lance!

Thank you to our UPS Driver Lance Marucci for not only delivering the game ball to AT&T Stadium, but for his dedicated service to the community as a UPS driver of 12 years.

We would like to offer our condolences to the family of Sgt. Butler of the Navasota PD. Sgt Butler heroically gave his life protecting the people of Navasota yesterday. We could not do our job and help horses and their owners without people like Sgt Butler. Please say a prayer for him and his family.
