Awkward but effective. Experiment with the “duck stance” during squatting movements to emphasize the inner quad. This variation specifically targets the vastus medialis oblique (VMO). Also known as the “tear drop,” this muscle is an important knee stabilizer and will help injury-proof the joint. And if you’re body fat levels are low enough, it also looks pretty damn impressive when wearing shorts or a bathing suit!

Traditional front raises help build toned, shapely shoulders but the overhead plate raise also brings the traps and rear delts into play, while triggering additional core recruitment.

As an added bonus, increasing shoulder strength will make everyday movements easier and lower your risk of rotator cuff tears and other injuries associated with repetitive motions.

When performing the overhead plate raise, be sure to maintain a slight bend in your knees to take pressure off of the lower back. This exercise lends itself well to drop sets and is highly effective as a “finisher.”
