American Naval Officer
1885 – 1966

Nimitz’s father died before he was born and his grandfather -- a Texas Ranger among other interesting historical achievements -- was his mentor as a young man.

As a naval submariner Nimitz walked through ranks as an officer on a fairly regular schedule, but unlike many he stayed on schedule all the way to the top.

During World War II, Nimitz commanded half of the US Navy and was credited with winning the war in the Pacific. A war that was particularly nasty on the ground, but won with sea and air superiority.

We will never know if Nimitz envisioned himself leading such a struggle, but it is fair to assume he must have often thought of his situation as hopeless.
