The Juke Joint
A backwoods, members only, Prohibition era barrelhouse hidden in a remote corner of Naples, Florida.
So after a lot of hype early in the year the Juke Joint project came to a screeching halt, thanks in part to a torn bicep and a rash of intense and inexplicable gout flare-ups (which, coincidentally, started immediately after I had COVID — go figure). Well I think I’m on the mend now, which means I can start working on the interior soon. The outside is all finished and weather tight. I’ll post some pics of that really soon. The AC is in and working. The electrical is connected. Next up is the fun part! My goal is to have it all done and ready for entertaining by early Spring.
Cheers!

One of my goals when building The Juke Joint is to make it look like it has been sitting among our palms and cypress trees for decades. To help accomplish this I filled a bucket with four gallons of white vinegar and dropped a large bag of steel wool into it. Then I let the vinegar sit for a few weeks before pouring it into a pump sprayer and applying it to the unfinished wood. Within a few days the wood took on a rusty gray patina and looked old and forgotten. My next step is to preserve and protect the wood with a clear, matte wood sealer. Sometime in the near future, probably after I finish the inside, I plan to artificially age the corrugated metal roof to make it oxidize and rust.

Much progress was made today on the roof framing. There’s an outside shot I’ll have the corrugated steel on it this weekend! 🍻

Hello, friends! Welcome to the official page of The Juke Joint, a backwoods house of ill repute and future home to endless nights of drunken revelry. I’ll be keeping you updated on the Juke Joint’s construction, as well as on future events like open mic and axe throwing 😱
Today Laura and I fought through the COVID fog and built trusses! Tomorrow we will finish framing the roof in preparation for the corrugated steel that will keep the rain off of our heads. Stay tuned for more pics soon 🍸
