Why Bad Data Is Your Biggest Fundraising Risk 06/02/2026

A recent article on data hygiene reinforced something we often talk about with clients: clean donor data is not just an operations issue.

It is a fundraising and communications strategy.

Annual reports, appeals, and acquisition mailings can have strong stories, beautiful design, and compelling calls to action, but they cannot perform as well as they should if donor lists are outdated, duplicated, incomplete, or poorly segmented.

Your mailing list is not just the final step before something goes to print. It is part of the strategy.

Even the strongest message cannot reach its full potential if it does not reach the right people.

Your Annual Report Is Only as Strong as Your Donor Mailing List 05/29/2026

A beautiful annual report or fundraising appeal can tell a powerful story, but only if it reaches the right people.

That is why your donor mailing list matters more than many organizations realize.

Outdated addresses, duplicate records, missing donors, and poorly segmented lists can quietly weaken the impact of your communications. Clean data helps your message do its job, whether you are sending an annual report, an appeal, or an acquisition mailing.

When your lists are reviewed and segmented early, you can speak to donors in a way that feels more personal, thoughtful, and connected to their relationship with your mission.

Before your next campaign, take time to clean your lists, review your audiences, and make sure each group is receiving the message that makes the most sense for them.

Because strong fundraising is not just about what you send. It is also about who receives it.

Strategic Annual Report Timing: Why Distribution Matters 05/19/2026

Your annual report should do more than look back. It should help donors understand what they made possible and why your work matters now.

In this new blog, we share why distribution timing matters more than many nonprofits realize. A strategic annual report can reconnect donors to your mission, build trust, and support year-end engagement when it is planned with the audience in mind.

We also touch on why the best reports are not crowded with every detail, but instead focus on clear impact, meaningful stories, and strong donor connection.

A good read for any nonprofit starting to think about annual report season.

How to make an annual report more engaging: The Skim-ability Formula 04/20/2026

Want to make your annual report more engaging?

We just shared a new blog all about how to create annual reports that people will actually read, not just flip past.

The biggest shift is this: don’t add more content, make your content easier to absorb.

In the blog, I break down a simple formula we use:

Headings + Pull Quotes + Infographics + Impact Facts

It is a practical way to help donors quickly understand your impact, stay engaged, and feel confident in what they are supporting.

If your annual report is starting to feel too dense, this may help.

💡

How to make an annual report more engaging: The Skim-ability Formula Your job is not to make people read your annual report. Your job is to make it easy for them to understand, quickly, why your work matters and why they should keep supporting it.

There is a big difference between hiring experts and actually letting them lead.

In nonprofit communications, we often see strong fundraising or campaign ideas lose momentum because too many people get involved in shaping the final message. More edits get added. More preferences get layered in. Before long, what started as clear and compelling becomes safe and a little ho-hum.

That does not mean collaboration is bad. It just means strategy needs structure. When you hire a writer, designer, or strategist, you are bringing in expertise for a reason. Trusting that expertise helps protect the clarity, focus, and impact of the work.

The strongest communications are not usually the ones with the most input. They are the ones with the clearest direction.

Too Much Collaboration Is Killing Your Appeals 03/20/2026

This article really hits on something we see all the time: when too many people get involved in a fundraising appeal, the final piece often loses its strength.

Everyone has an opinion. But when feedback comes from too many voices, especially people outside of marketing and communications, the message can get watered down, the design gets overworked, and the final deliverable ends up feeling pretty ho-hum.

Strong fundraising appeals need strategy, clarity, and the confidence to stay focused. They are not meant to be built by committee.

Sometimes the issue is not the message itself. It is the process behind it.

That is why clear ownership and thoughtful feedback matter so much if you want communications that actually connect with donors.

Too Much Collaboration Is Killing Your Appeals Too much fundraising appeal collaboration can weaken donor messaging. Learn how limiting feedback leads to stronger fundraising appeals.

Happy Friday ☀️

If your nonprofit’s message sounds a little different depending on who’s talking (development, programs, leadership), you’re not alone. But that disconnect can quietly cost donor trust.

I just published a quick 3-minute read on building a clear, consistent messaging foundation that makes every appeal, post, and report easier:

Clarity builds trust. Trust drives giving.
