MARKET TURN INSIGHTS: There is a deepening underperformance of consumer stocks against a resilient broader market.
The equal-weighted US consumer discretionary index relative to the S&P 500 has fallen to 0.07, its lowest reading in 20 years. Since 2021, this ratio has collapsed -42%, breaking below both the 2020 and 2008 lows. Over the same period, the S&P 500 has surged +60%, outperforming the equal-weighted consumer discretionary index by roughly 10x, with the latter gaining just +6%.
The weakness is echoed in sentiment data: US Consumer Sentiment fell a further -5.0 points in May following a -3.5 point drop in April, reaching an all-time low of 44.8. The disconnect with equities is striking — the S&P 500 is up +17% since March 30th and closed Friday just -0.5% below its all-time high.
Bottom Line: The consumer is flashing a warning sign that equity markets have so far chosen to ignore. With discretionary stocks at a 20-year relative low, sentiment at an all-time low, and the ratio breaking below crisis-era floors, the data points to a consumer under genuine stress.
The key question is whether this is a leading indicator for broader market weakness or simply a reflection of a bifurcated economy — where high-income households drive equity gains while lower-income consumers retrench.
Either way, the gap between Wall Street and Main Street has rarely been wider.

Our Founder & Managing Partner, Jason Stephens, sits down with Barron's to talk about the tax benefits of living in Florida for wealthy Americans.
Florida is attracting a new, younger generation of wealthy Americans — not just retirees, but working-age financial professionals and business owners who can run their operations remotely. Jason has been hosting workshops for prospective Florida migrants for two decades and has seen attendance grow from about 150 to 250 people per winter season. His typical attendees have a net worth between $25 million and $200 million.
The migration is being fueled by rising taxes in other states, now intensified by federal funding cuts that are forcing states to fill budget gaps. California is pursuing a one-time 5% billionaire tax, and Washington recently passed a 9.9% "millionaire's tax" on income above $1 million.
The savings can be significant by moving to Florida, as there is no state income tax, estate tax or inheritance tax. For example, a New Yorker earning $1 million annually can potentially save over $100,000 a year in income taxes alone, while a $100 million estate avoids nearly $15 million in New York estate taxes. Florida also allows dynasty trusts that can shelter wealth for up to a thousand years.
