Building Science is BS! 😏😉
Joe and Eileen Konopacki met up with some other industry leaders at a meeting of “BS + Beer Boston”.
Peter Yost, Building Science sage and self-professed “Wingnut,” collaborates with Cody Pelletier, owner/CEO of Laurel Windows, reimagining window design and installation to improve high performance builds. They talked about installation sequencing, water management strategy, air sealing, and integration with modern wall assemblies. The discussion inspired questions, ideas, and solutions from attendees that included Steven Baczek - Architect, BS’er Mark Wille, and high-per builder Josh Brennecke (featured recently on The Build Show), and Insight’s own Joe Konopacki.

Insight’s Joe Konopacki is on The Build Show latest episode! In this episode, builder Steve Baczek talks about the importance of a mid-construction blower door test on a home before insulation and drywall are installed.
Building airtightness is crucial not just for energy savings, but also for long-term durability, moisture control, and maximizing HVAC and window performance. During the on-site testing, the team used artificial fog to visually locate and pinpoint remaining gaps in the building envelope.

Today, we're shining a spotlight on one of the unsung heroes of energy audits: The Manometer!
Simply put, a manometer is a fancy pressure gauge. In home performance testing, it's essential for measuring the tiny pressure differences between inside your house and the outside, and between different zones within the house. These small pressure imbalances are a HUGE clue when tracking down air leaks!
Manometers are used during three different tests: blower door, duct leakage and zonal pressure testing. We use it to measure the pressure induced by the blower door fan, which allows us to calculate how leaky your entire house is. During duct leakage testing it isolates the ductwork, and helps us determine if your heating and cooling delivery system is losing precious conditioned air to unconditioned spaces (like attics or crawlspaces). We check the pressure relationship between different rooms and the main body of the house during zonal pressure testing. Negative or positive pressure in a room can indicate improper ventilation, back drafting hazards, or hidden air leaks impacting comfort.
The manometer gives us the precise, quantitative data needed to pinpoint problems, prioritize fixes, and ensure your home is sealed, safe, and comfortable. It's the difference between guessing where the air leaks are and knowing where they are!
Want to see our manometer in action during a comprehensive Home Performance Test? Schedule your audit with the INSIGHT team today (630)283-2248
Mark your calendars! Insight Building Performance Training will be hosting an open enrollment BPI Building Science Principles class. We have openings for Tuesday September 15, 2026 or Saturday September 19, 2026.
This will be a one-day course designed to help participants strengthen their understanding of how homes work as a system—including comfort, efficiency, durability, health, and safety.
For home inspectors, this can count toward home inspector continuing education credits. 2026 is a renewal year—don’t wait until the last minute!

Joe Konopacki was out in Massachusetts the other week for an incredible filming session with the team from Retrotec and The Build Show . We put the Retrotec Multi-Fan Automated System (MASS) blower door to work to evaluate building enclosure leakage on a truly impressive project.
With the monopoly framing complete and windows fully installed, we were able to get a clear picture of the home’s performance. The verdict? This house is impressively tight!
Huge congratulations to Josh Brennecke for the meticulous attention to detail and hard work that led to these fantastic results. It was a pleasure collaborating on-site with Sam T Myers from Retrotec, Steven Baczek the Architect, and our close friend Mark Wille
Be on the lookout for the video segment dropping from The Build Show soon to see this powerhouse equipment in action!

After severe weather hits Chicagoland, getting your roof patched, siding replaced, or basement dried out is just step one. Step two is ensuring those repairs were executed correctly and your house is performing safely as a whole system.
At Insight, we approach post-storm evaluations through the lens of building science. We do not just look at superficial fixes; we evaluate your "Home as a System" to verify that contractor repairs have truly restored your property’s durability, safety, and energy efficiency.
Why schedule a post-repair inspection with the Insight team?
Verify Workmanship: We provide an unbiased, third-party look at your recent repairs to ensure they meet proper safety and construction standards.
Catch Hidden Issues: Water migration, compromised attic ventilation, and shifting structural elements often go unnoticed behind brand-new drywall or roofing shingles.
Help Prevent Future Denials: Insurance companies frequently look closely at post-storm maintenance. Having a professional snapshot of your property's current condition can help protect your investment down the road.
Don't guess if your home is safe—know for sure. Let our certified, licensed team give you the true clarity and peace of mind you deserve. Call the INSIGHT team today to schedule your inspection (630) 283-2248

Just because an energy-saving tip sounds smart doesn’t mean it actually saves money. A recent Popular Science article breaks down a few common home energy myths—like closing vents in unused rooms, leaving fans on to “cool” an empty room, or constantly changing the thermostat—and explains why some of these habits can actually WASTE energy instead of saving it.
The big takeaway: real savings come from understanding how your HVAC system actually works, not from quick fixes that only seem efficient. Worth a read if you want to cut your utility bill. https://www.popsci.com/diy/home-energy-conservation-myths/
