Our casts of How to Train Your Dragon: The Musical Jr. and The Drowsy Chaperone Jr. have been working so hard, and we couldn't be more proud of everything they're accomplishing.

A MESSAGE FROM GREG LONDON: 💬

As we wrap up three incredible sessions of Beach to Broadway Summer Camp, I’ve been reflecting on the two questions we’re asked most often:

“How do you choose your shows?”

“Will the children have fun?”

The answer to both is rooted in our educational mission.

We don’t start with titles.

We start with educational outcomes.

At Long Bay Theatre, every season is built like a curriculum. Before selecting a show, we ask what our students have already learned, what experiences they’ve had, and what will help them grow next.

Each morning, students train in acting, singing, and dance. In the afternoon, they put those skills into practice in rehearsal. Learning and performance are inseparable, and our leadership team includes trained educators who ensure every class and production is guided by intentional educational goals.

This year’s productions reflected that philosophy.

Our high school students explored three distinct eras and styles of musical theatre through Oklahoma!, High School Musical Jr., and The Drowsy Chaperone Jr., while always returning to one essential principle: truthful storytelling.

Our younger students built confidence, collaboration, imagination, ensemble skills, movement, and puppetry through Trolls Jr., Finding Nemo Jr., and How to Train Your Dragon Jr.

And yes, the children have an incredible time.

They work hard. They’re challenged. They discover strengths they didn’t know they had. They laugh, create, encourage one another, make lifelong friends, and leave with memories that last far beyond the final curtain.

That’s the beauty of great theatre education.

It doesn’t make students choose between learning and having fun.

It gives them both.

We don’t build seasons to produce great shows.

We build seasons to develop great artists.

And when education comes first, great theatre naturally follows.
