On June 28, 1776, South Carolina militia successfully defended Charleston Harbor at the Battle of Sullivan’s Island during the American Revolution. The fort, built from palmetto logs, absorbed British cannon fire and helped secure a major American victory.

The resilience shown that day is why the palmetto tree remains a symbol on South Carolina’s state flag today.

Monday History: Hurricane Hugo

In September 1989, Hurricane Hugo slammed into the South Carolina coast near Charleston as a Category 4 hurricane.

It wasn’t a “normal storm” for the state — it was a turning point.

Wind speeds exceeded 135 mph. Entire communities were cut off overnight. Power was out for weeks in some areas. Roads were blocked by fallen trees so massive that crews couldn’t clear them fast enough to get through.

Coastal towns were hit hardest, but the damage stretched far inland. Homes were torn apart, boats were thrown into neighborhoods, and forestry losses alone were in the billions.

For many families, the hardest part wasn’t just the damage — it was discovering afterward that their coverage didn’t work the way they thought it did.

Hugo reshaped how South Carolina looks at storms and insurance to this day.
And every hurricane season since, it’s been the same lesson:
You don’t prepare during the storm. You prepare long before it forms.
