GLP‑1 medications (like semaglutide) help people lose 15–20% of their body weight in clinical trials. Because that’s a lot of weight, some lean mass (including muscle) is lost too. However, new research shows:

The majority of weight loss is from fat, not muscle.
Muscle loss is proportionate, not disproportionate to total weight lost.
Relative muscle mass and strength can improve, leading to better mobility.
Muscle loss happens with any significant weight loss, not just GLP‑1s.

Muscle loss isn’t a unique “side effect” of GLP‑1s — it’s an effect of losing weight when calories (and sometimes protein) are low.
