Abuja β May 18β21: Community engagement expert Gerald Atampugre from the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and Mansour Boundaogo from SNV delivered the first Inclusive Landscape Management (ILM) training workshop under the Soil Values program.
Soil Values is a 10-year initiative β led by the International Fertilizer Development Center (IFDC) β working across Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger, and Northern Nigeria to improve soil fertility, strengthen productive capacity, and build more resilient farming systems in the Sahel.
You cannot plan the future of a region by leaving part of its population behind. That is why, at the heart of the ILM training, the GESI principle (Gender Equality and Social Inclusion) guided every step of landscape management planning. Whether through participatory mapping, situation analyses, or the creation of community committees, the focus was on amplifying the voices of women, youth, and marginalized groups.
Why does this matter?
β
It identifies and effectively removes the barriers blocking access to resources,
β
It ensures that the solutions developed benefit the entire community equitably.
A big thank you to all the gender experts, field workers, and facilitators engaged in this effort to build more resilient landscapes!

The current fertilizer crisis has rapidly evolved into a global shock to agricultural systems.
In response, IFDC, Sustain Africa, and AfricaFertilizer have called for urgent global coordination to stabilize markets, safeguard fertilizer access, and protect food production.
To support these efforts, we have been providing weekly Fertilizer Crisis Response Bulletins to share timely analysis, inform decision-making, and support coordinated mitigation efforts. These bulletins compile the latest market developments, risks, and policy recommendations.

Strengthening Strategic Dialogue on Soil Health in Ghana
On 4 June 2026, the delegation, led by IFDC, engaged with senior officials at the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA) in Accra. The meeting provided an important platform for exploring strategic collaboration on soil health and fertility in Ghana.
The discussions reaffirmed strong interest from MoFA in advancing key priorities, including:
β‘οΈ Capacity strengthening in soil health and soil fertility practices
β‘οΈ Revitalizing the national soil information system
β‘οΈ Strengthening soil testing laboratories and diagnostic services
MoFA also discussed perspectives on how Ghana, currently a strategic country within the Soil Values Program, could further deepen engagement through targeted support aligned with national priorities.
MoFA underscored their appreciation for IFDC and Soil Valuesβ work and expressed their intention to share concrete needs and proposals to guide future collaboration.
This engagement marks an important step toward building a stronger partnership to support sustainable soil management and agricultural transformation in Ghana.

The Contributes to Advancing West Africaβs Rice Investment Agenda.
At the close of the Rice Investment Roundtable in Accra, countries and partners agreed on concrete steps to scale investment across the region.
As part of the Rice Investment Compact (2026β2035), 16 countries committed US$1.54 billion for this year, aiming to sustain this level of investment annually to meet the US$26.5 billion needed to achieve rice self-sufficiency by 2035.
Soil Values contributed to this progress by helping drive the conversation toward real, practical solutions through:
βοΈ Moderation of the Ministerial Session by Program Director Alain Sy TraorΓ©, helping steer the discussion toward practical, investment-ready solutions.
βοΈ Contribution to the Partners Dialogue (AGRA, IFDC, AfricaRice) on scaling investment beyond stand-alone projects toward scalable, investment-driven approaches.
βοΈ B2B exchanges with delegations across the region to strengthen collaboration on soil health and soil fertility.
As West Africa moves from commitments to action on rice self-sufficiency, healthy soils and stronger soil systems are essential to boost productivity, reduce costs, and make local rice competitive.
The foundation is in place. Now itβs time to deliver at scale.
