Morgans Bounty

Progress is continuing on these three pieces. Beginning blends… soon the raised embellishments that I added to the cabinet doors will have a bit of color, and all 3 pieces will have blue vine art. It’s a process, but I think it will be worth it!

Well the old girl is standing after the joint repair, a few coats of primer and we’re trying the first coat of color to see if the bleeding has stopped. Yet. Stay tuned, she and 2 of her friends are hanging out with me.

Tuesday is my workweek Monday at the studio and it started off with hip surgery on a hemophiliac bleeder. Prognosis is great. 😊

Prepping 4 pieces right now and I gotta say, this old screw and bead method of drawer stop makes a lot of sense! Adjustable and keeps the drawer running straight and stopping without falling out. Have you come across these before???

Once in awhile a job kicks my butt! I normally would have avoided doing (6!) chairs 🪑like these with so many spindles, especially with a color change. But the outcome was worth it! I stripped down the previous yellowing finish on this vintage Amish made hickory set BECAUSE I wanted to work with this exceptional wood. 🪵
A light staining with voodoo gel stain in Charred Hickory (by Dixie Belle Paint Company) did the magic to even out some of the extreme natural color variations without hiding the unique characteristics of the beautiful Hickory. The spindles and base are finished with Anchor Black.
Another furniture painter was in to pick something up when one of the chairs was curing toward the front of the studio. She thought I had only done the black parts and that the rest was the natural wood… mission accomplished! But no. Much more involved to restore this old set back to this state!

Yes, spindle chairs are my least favorite thing to work on. Add color change from a natural wood seat (lotsa detail work to keep it clean).
BUT. HICKORY! Hickory may be my all time favorite wood to work with. Here’s a little peek at what’s been keeping me so busy.
