This is a deep and simple wish from Fred, and we wish it for you - that today, you will give yourself the gift of a quiet moment. Know that this is an essential gift for children, too. Fred saw solitude as one of the six basic necessities for being able and ready to learn. You do not need to fill a child’s day with activities and lessons and stimulation. When a child can pause and be alone with their thoughts, they will be able to learn more about who they are, and they will be ready to learn about others and the world.

Good for the whole family!

I sent a text to parents with an at-home activity for anyone who wants to participate. If you didn’t get the text and would like to please let me know! I will send another text with an alternate or additional activity that is more “active” soon.

To those of you holding many feelings for children in these weeks, thank you. Reorganizing daily life is not easy, but we are grateful to watch the world make efforts large and small to protect vulnerable people. In the coming days, we will be sharing resources from partner organizations for those of you looking for ways to create learning opportunities and structure for children at home. We will also continue to share reminders and resources from Fred Rogers about what children may need from the adults in their lives during these uncertain times.

While the Cincinnati Zoo is closed and kids are home from school, let us help make your children’s hiatus from school fun and educational.
