Community Roots
We are working to rehabilitate the former Glass Gardens Nursery property and have developed as:

Formerly known as Glass Gardens Greenhouse, the approximately six acres at the end of West Gambier Street in Mount Vernon has experienced a shift in land use since Glass Gardens closed its doors in 2010. A little dragonfly wisdom from the garden today 🐉✨
When we saw this guy in the gardens, we were reminded:
Change is part of growth.
We’ve had quite a few questions the past couple of months and we know many of you have heard some mixed bits and pieces, so we wanted to share a clear update about the Woodward commercial kitchen space:
Earlier this spring, it was announced that The Woodward Kitchen would be closing. We’re happy to share that it will *remain open*…The latest update is that the kitchen will be under new management (Avalos Foods) beginning August 1. That’s all we know.
Current members—or anyone interested in using the space moving forward—need to connect with the new management. We’re happy to pass along that info, just send us a message!
As for us, we’re still here (and still baking 😊). Cottage baked bread will continue, and you can find us on Saturdays at , as well as by direct order.
Questions? Curious about anything? Reach out anytime—we’re always glad to connect.

Three years in the making 🌼
This patch of dyer’s chamomile has been quietly building color season after season—now a steady source of natural dye for local makers.
For dye, it’s all about the flowers. We harvest the blooms right as they open (like these), when the pigment is strongest. Fresh or dried, they’re simmered down into a golden dye bath that carries those rich yellows onto fiber.
Dyer’s chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria) is one of the most generous dye plants we grow—producing warm, sunlit yellows that can shift depending on the mordant used. No synthetic inputs, no toxic residues—just plant-based color, grown slowly and intentionally.
We process these harvests into dye baths used on natural fabrics and yarns for local makers—bringing this color from field to fiber right here in the community.
Local makers: if you’re interested in working with our naturally grown dyes, send us a message 🌿

Another shoutout to one of our favorite cover crops: **field peas** 🌱
We’re in the garlic patch this week, gently pulling and crimping the peas right in place. It’s a simple move with big impact—laying them down helps us spot those elusive garlic scapes *and* creates an instant mulch layer.
That mulch is doing a lot of quiet work:
• holding moisture
• buffering heavy rains and summer heat
• feeding the soil as it breaks down
• and yes… keeping thistle and its rowdy friends from taking over
No hauling, no waste—just letting the system cycle nutrients right where they’re needed.
This is what we love about cover crops: they’re not just “off-season fillers.” They’re active partners in the growing process. 💚
