“Thing” is a kind of placeholder. Things are things that exist. Things are everything. And nothing. The word “thing” is often used when a more specific term is unknown or unnecessary – when an object, idea, activity, or situation is, for whatever reason, unnamed.

I have always had a fascination with language and speech sounds and have composed many works using speech fragments from recorded interviews as the primary source of the melodic and rhythmic elements in the music. To create this piece for loadbang, I harvested language from interview material from past works – selecting for instances of the word “thing” in both singular and plural form and taken separately as well as in phrases. These fragments appear as both sampled material in the tape part and as musical phrases in the ensemble’s parts. And, in keeping with the ‘place-holder’ nature of the word “thing”, I also elected to slip some of the familiar “Lorem ipsum” text (often used in design to stand-in for content) into the baritone part.
