If a trainer tells you they can “fix” your dog in an hour, they’re scamming you.

Most dogs can learn how to sit in an hour, but it’s instilling it in their brain, how to do it, and how to do it without a treat that takes many hours, days, weeks, months to actually embedded into their system where it isn’t forced, but a choice they wanna make.

Training isn’t something you do for a couple months when they’re a puppy and then forget about it as they get older. It is an ongoing and ever growing skill that they can polish and better as they age.

Most dog owners didn’t know that:

1. If your dog experiences high cortisol levels, it takes them four full days to come back down to a normal hormonal equilibrium.

this means that if they experience something stressful on a Monday, it won’t be until Friday until they’re ready to deal with anything remotely stressful again. That’s why rest days in between training are so important to success! Imagine you are running on no sleep, would continuing to run on no sleep fix you?

2. Your dog can change their hormonal balances to match yours.

Have you ever noticed that when you’re sad your dog might come and comfort you, or when you’re excited your dog is also excited? That’s because they feed off of your energy and will match your hormonal levels as a form of appeasement.

3. Your dog doesn’t have a moral compass.

Your dog has emotions, sure. But they are not the same way that we feel emotions. If your dog does something that they aren’t supposed to do, they don’t have the moral compass to know whether it’s right or wrong. They just see your reaction and they will adjust how they react.

Different dogs with different homes require different needs. It’s important to know your options when it comes to helping your dog become successful.

Not many can be home to train, and sometimes management feels like a lot. using both training and management will help prevent disruptive behaviors, and create positive or neutral ones instead. It’s a delicate balance of knowing which to use and when.

It’s not your fault, sometimes we are taught through myths, lies and misinformation that are passed around longer than it’s meant to.

The biggest key to loving your dog is understanding and communicating with them. Do your research, ask a professional, and make an effort to really establish a relationship with your dog.

Believe it or not, but the smaller things will improve your dogs behavior MUCH MORE than intense training. These small things create a well regulated dog that’s equalized and ready to take on the day🎖️

With over 30 years of training and thousands of dogs we’ve seen, it’s easy to look back on the beginning of our journeys and think “why didn’t I realize it sooner”.

Reactivity takes a long time to work through. It will take weeks and months of consistent work.

Be alert, be aware, and look for clues and external information to figure out why your dog might be reactive or reacting to something.

If I wasn’t afraid to hurt your feelings, I’d say this.

For some reason, we seen as glorified dog walkers. While that’s a completely honorable and professional job, we are trainers with certifications and years of experience under our belts. We are educators, mentors, and masters of our job deserve the respect of any professional in any other field.

I wish more people understood the importance of taking time to bond with your dog.

Most people think a 5 minute walk or a couple tosses of the ball is substantial for “quality time”. And they couldn’t be further from the truth.

Choosing to have a dog is a lifetime investment. Your dog isn’t going to listen to you if you’re don’t make the effort to create a relationship with them. Why would they care about listening to you when you’ve done to make them want to ?

I wish more people made a conscious effort to spend ample time with their dog. Things as simple as knowing their favorite form of play, their preferred treats, their favorite places to be scratched, where they like to take their afternoon naps, and which is their favorite place to watch from a window.

The more you listen and learn about your dog, the more your dog will listen and learn from you.
