Thinking about stepping into the head spa space? Let’s talk about the reality of what it actually takes to build your business. ✨ Here are the biggest things you should know before you open your doors:

📜 Licensing matters (but there are workarounds). In most states, you’re required to have a cosmetology license to shampoo hair. Traditional services involve water, but that doesn’t mean estheticians or massage therapists are left out! You can absolutely create your own dry head spa protocol that doesn’t involve water and still offer an incredible, deeply relaxing scalp experience.

📱 Prepare for your second full-time job. You are now a social media content creator! The head spa space is growing, but so many people are still discovering it for the very first time online. Your content needs to show people exactly what to expect before they ever sit in your chair.

🛏️ You don’t need a $12,000 bed. Equipment is expensive, but you don’t need the most aesthetic, top-tier bed to create a luxury experience. Most clients don’t care what brand your bed is, they just want to feel comfortable and relaxed enough to fall asleep in your treatment room.

📚 Invest in education over equipment. Instead of putting all your money into the fanciest tools, invest in your knowledge. When you can offer a truly thoughtful, educational consultation, it completely transforms the appointment. It takes the service from a one-time indulgence to a necessity they understand the value of and want to rebook again and again.

Transparency time! ✨ Opening Root Rituals has been the most rewarding journey, but there is a huge learning curve in the scalp care industry. If I was a beginner, here is exactly what I would do:

1️⃣ Research trichology programs carefully. It is so easy to take the programs that a lot of these hair loss influencers selling MLM products on TikTok live recommend, but they hardly teach anything. My first program was essentially an extremely expensive product knowledge class dressed up as a certification. True trichology takes months to a year of dedicated study, not a two-day course!

2️⃣ Invest in a high quality steamer immediately. I tried to save money at first by purchasing less expensive steamers. After replacing them multiple times, I realized I could have just bought my dream steamer right away with the money I wasted. Sometimes it’s better to invest in the right equipment from day one. ☁️

3️⃣ Allow more time for consultations. First-time client consultations can easily take 15–30 minutes. Issues like dandruff, scalp congestion, and hair loss are deeply personal and can be difficult to talk about. My clients are looking for real answers and support, and those conversations deserve time. You should never feel rushed in my chair!
