Mappin & Webb oyster forks from the early 1900's. Oyster season is upon us (hallelujah!) and these gorgeous forks will elevate your oyster roast to a new level! For almost 250 years Mappin & Webb have been crafting some of the most beautiful silverware for British society. They have been commissioned by monarchs around the world and their wares have graced the tables of celebrities. Although these forks are all the Louis XVI pattern this may be a mismatched set as 3 are from the Furness Withy Hotels Bermuda (1920's), 1 Princes Plate, and 2 Mappin Plate. Prince’s plate is higher quality than normal silver plate, the process uses a triple deposit of silver, and has an added coating of protection on all vertices and edges of their pieces of cutlery. The result of this is that these Mappin and Webb Prince’s plate items of cutlery wear more like sterling silver, and have far more durability. Oh, if only they could talk the stories they might tell!

Fun fact: No one has been able to accurately decipher the Mappin date code system yet!

Lobster with your Feast of Seven Fishes? Yes, please! These lovely tools were found in Sheffield, England. The 9" pick is by Walker & Hall circa 1931. The 7.5" pick is by James Deakin & Sons of Sheffield, circa 1881-1886. It is EP, standard quality 'A'. $25 for both.

To polish or not to polish? There is something about the tarnish on these knives that I love. How long has it been there? In whose kitchen drawer have they been aging? If only they could talk, what stories would they tell?

If you want to know about silver you go to Sheffield. Visited the Sheffield Assay Office and learned about the process of having an item hallmarked. I got to hold the official Queen's 70th Jubilee hallmark! They certify silver, platinum, palladium & gold. They asked that I not post pictures of the hallmarking room which was really a highlight of the tour.
