What a gorgeous spring day to serve our community! Our SCAMS Chapter has participated in the M-DOT Adopt-A-Highway program for many years now ♻️ We have groups of members volunteer each spring to walk down and pick up our stretch of M-20. Not only is it always a fun excuse to hang out, but we also get to make a direct impact on the community 🌱🌎 Thanks to everyone who could make it out this year!

Over the past few weeks, CMU Weather organized the 1st annual EAS Symposium held in our very own Brooks Hall! Students from all majors within the Earth Atmospheric Sciences had the chance to share their research with peers and advisors at CMU. It was a fun and insightful event for all who attended, many great academic conversations were had!We would love to give one more huge thanks to our Growth & Development Outreach chairs for CMU Weather, David Couch and Turner Williams for putting in the work to make this happen. 🌦️

METAR Madness has officially wrapped up, and with quite a fairytale ending! Springtime in Michigan always provides interesting variations in weather, and it’s safe to say our forecasters would agree. With so many upsets in round 1, we all knew it would be fun to watch this play out.
The final 4 was a tough battle, and came down to an even tougher tiebreaker to determine the who would continue on to the championship: two non-meteorologists! In a riveting turn of events, it was 2 family members of our club members who would compete in the final round. Kelli Duran came out on top in the end, with 2 perfect temperature forecasts on the season. Kelli graciously accepted her title as METAR champion, but was so kind as to donate her winnings back to the club. CMU Weather wants to give a huge thank you to Kelli for her generosity, and to everyone who participated in the fun this year! 🌤️🌡️

This weekend, 18 members of our club drove out to Des Moines, IA to attend the 28th Annual Severe Weather and Doppler Radar Conference held by the Central Iowa NWA Chapter. Our chapter has been attending this conference for years, and each time has been an insightful and inspiring experience for the members. We were able to hear from many knowledgeable speakers in the realm of severe weather, including a few of our own from CMU! Additionally, 2 of our undergraduates had research presented in the poster session. The radar workshop is also always a favorite memory from our members as well. 🌪️
Thanks again to The Central Iowa NWA Chapter for hosting us, and thank you to anyone who has contributed to any of our fundraising over the year. We are incredibly grateful to have had the funds to bring so many students to an amazing opportunity for learning and networking. 🌩️

Is your March Madness bracket already falling apart? No worries, CMU SCAMS is hosting our own “METAR”Madness, a single elimination style bracket anyone can participate in, meteorology background or not. Your objective is to accurately predict a high temperature for Mt. Pleasant, MI . Sign ups will run through March 28th.
Once registration closes we will create a bracket with all participants, and you will be emailed a google form on 3/30 where you input your high temperature prediction for the next day 3/31. High temperatures will be verified the night of 3/31, and whoever has the closest prediction, you or your randomly selected opponent, to the nearest tenth will advance to the next round which will start on 4/1. On 4/1 the next google form will be sent out where participants who advanced will input their predictions for 4/2. This cycle will repeat until we have our winner.
50% of the proceeds will go to our club, 40% to the winner of the bracket, and 10% to the person who gets the most people to sign up. So if you share this to your friends and family and get many to people to sign up, 10% of the pot could be yours! It is $10 dollars to participate. Sign up below!!

A handful of our SCAMS members (and grad students) were able to travel down to Houston, TX for the 106th Annual AMS Meeting last week! Many of our undergraduates were able to present their research at the poster sessions, and some of our graduate students presented during various sessions of the conference. Additionally, our chapter won 3rd place in the local chapter poster competition! Both the student conference and main conference were wonderful experiences for all of us who attended, and we cannot wait to come back next year! 🌤️
