What if AI makes data centers less valuable to local labor markets?
As automation improves, fewer workers may be needed to operate facilities. As remote work expands, some of those jobs may not even be local.
Our data shows the share of remote data center technician and engineer postings increased from 6.7% in 2022 to 10.2% in 2025.
For communities, that's a tradeoff.
Automation can help projects move forward despite talent shortages.
But it can also reduce the number of permanent local jobs created.
The future debate about data centers may not be "How many jobs will they create?" but rather "How many jobs will they sustain?"

Re: Data Centers.... [[ The regional workforce is still the constraint. ]]
Communities spend enormous time debating power availability, land use, permitting, tax incentives, environmental concerns, and infrastructure.
Those things matter.
But even if every one of those challenges is solved, there's still a fundamental question:
Who is actually going to build and operate the facility?
A region can have investor interest || A shovel-ready site. || A power strategy. || Political support....and yet *still fail* to capture the promised economic impact because the workforce doesn't exist at the scale required.
Workforce isn't a secondary consideration. It's THE feasibility study.

Healthcare sits squarely within the path of the three major Fault Lines that are rattling the global labor market: labor shortages, geopolitics, and artificial intelligence.
Our three-part blog series explores the data behind the disruptions:
• Healthcare’s demand for workers is intensifying, but pressures from aging demographics, education shortfalls, and high job turnover are squeezing the Healthcare labor supply within the US.
Article: https://lightcast.io/resources/blog/healthcare-labor-shortages-fault-lines
• Geopolitical shifts are also disrupting the flow of talent from outside the US and raising concerns about the high dependence on foreign-born workers in Healthcare.
Article: https://lightcast.io/resources/blog/healthcare-geopolitics-fault-lines
• To fill the Healthcare talent gaps and augment the existing workforce, many are looking to artificial intelligence as a possible solution. But so far, AI exposure remains low in the jobs that most need to be filled.

Before AI can solve healthcare's workforce crisis, it has to show up where the crisis actually is.
8 of the 10 least AI-exposed occupations are in healthcare, and the sector has one of the lowest AI adoption rates of any industry: just 0.7%.
Meanwhile, it faces some of the most severe labor shortages in the economy.
That's the paradox.
Much of today's AI investment is concentrated in occupations where talent is relatively abundant, while healthcare organizations continue to struggle with persistent staffing shortages, rising demand, and an aging population.
The result: AI is transforming work, but not necessarily relieving pressure where workers are needed most.
Our latest analysis explores why healthcare sits at the intersection of two major labor market fault lines: AI disruption and labor scarcity.

Too often, learning and development operates separately from business strategy.
A skills-powered approach changes that.
Instead of asking, "What training should we offer?"
Leading organizations ask:
"What skills will have the biggest impact on our business goals?"
When L&D is aligned to a skills framework:
• Skill gaps become visible
• Learning paths become more targeted
• Workforce agility improves
• Training investments become easier to justify
Employee development should be connected directly to organizational priorities.
Step 4 of our new ebook explores how to align learning programs with the skills that matter most. Download the full guide to see the complete blueprint. https://lightcast.pub/10steps-skills

AI isn't helping alleviate healthcare job shortages.
The industry faces some of the most acute workforce deficits, yet AI adoption remains below 1%.
AI can augment care, reduce administrative burden, and help organizations do more with a workforce that is increasingly difficult to find and retain. But it's not being utilized effectively yet. Furthermore, AI cannot truly do the CARE in healthcare.
Our new article examines what that means for the future of healthcare talent.
