Hello! Welcome to HW Acres. We are so excited to finally share that we will be opening up our very own beginner and intermediate lesson program beginning in January 2024!

My name is Rachael, I’ve been teaching under my sister at CMB Training for the past two and a half years, while working for her as a stall cleaner or general barn staff member over the 16 years that she ran her business. As of December 31, 2023, CMB Training officially closes its doors for the last time as my sister, her husband and their kids step into a wonderful new opportunity to grow closer as a family. I hope that everyone from CMB will like and follow our page to stay up to date on our progress as we continue to work towards getting our business up off the ground.

Pictured with me is Katelynd and her daughter, Lainey💕 I couldn’t be more blessed to go into business with another member of my family! She will be my partner in all things lessons and horse care- we will start off co-teaching so many of our lessons who will be starting with us in January have a chance to meet and get to know her before she begins teaching them on her own.

I can’t thank Abby (CMB Training) enough for all of the knowledge she has given me about caring for horses, caring about my lesson students, and believing in myself and God over the past- well, 25 years really! I have loved every minute of the last two years working as an assistant instructor to my sister and getting to learn from her every second of the day.

Communication solves a lot of problems

Do you Kick, Cluck, Kiss Or Something Else.

When you ask your horse to move out at a certain speed do you have and do you use specific cues; if so what are they?

For the walk, what is your cue?

For the trot, what is your cue?

For a lope how do you ask?

For each individual speed we need to have clear and defined specific signals that stay consistent and are ALL separate from each other.

Some of the problems we have with our speed transitions and a delayed response from our horse is due to unclear cues. This creates a situation where our horse has to sort out what specific transition we are specifically asking for; allow me to clarify.

The scene typically goes something like this; it is noticed that there is some confusion and I ask the question, what is your cue to ask for a walk?

Rider: "usually I kick"
Me: "How about the trot?"
Rider: "I kick"
Me: "Now the lope?"
Rider: "Well I kick"

And here in lie's the confusion, we kick for a walk, a trot and a lope and wonder why it takes our horse so long to figure out what we are asking for, what we expect.

Instead my advice is to decide on what cues you want to use, it doesn't matter what they are as long as the horse can understand what they mean and we are consistent with using them.
Make them specific to the speed you are requesting and make sure there is a clear difference between the other speeds.

So take a few minutes and think about what and how you cue your horse, tomorrow I will go over what I use to cue when I ride and why I chose them.
