We’re a step closer to redefining the second, the international unit of time. A NIST-led team compared three of the world’s leading atomic clocks, each ticking at its own frequency, across distances with record accuracy.

Right now, we determine the world standard time by combining the signals of multiple cesium-based atomic clocks all around the world. Cesium has dominated the definition of the second since 1967 with its microwave frequency.

Using clocks based on atoms that tick at unique, higher optical frequencies – aluminum, ytterbium and strontium – could divide time into even smaller units and boost our precision. But until now, translating one atom’s signal into another has been an apples-to-oranges challenge.

Not only have our researchers successfully translated those signals from one atomic clock to another, they did so across distances. For atomic clocks to function and communicate all around the world, they need to connect with one another via optical fibers or wirelessly over air.

We did that.

In fact, the team’s measurements for both of those link methods were so accurate that uncertainties were only 6 to 8 parts in 10^18, meaning errors never exceeded 0.0000000000000008%.
