A little over a year ago Helene destroyed our crops.  But we were fortunate that the waters did not take our soil.  The healthy soil we've worked to build up over the last 16 years has been resilient and bountiful this year.

We are also fortunate to live higher in a watershed where we were not left with trash or contamination in our fields. 

But one thing the floodwaters did leave was lots of w**d seeds!  This year we've worked with all sorts of clever hand tools and wheel hoes and good ol fashioned sweat to keep the new crop of w**ds at bay in our hoops.

But at the field scale it's a little harder by hand.  That's where this awesome tractor implement comes in handy.  It's like sweeping the field of these little w**ds in their "white thread stage."  It's the stage when the w**ds are mostly baby root and are at their most vulnerable.  

A few passes with the tractor over a few weeks  keeps the field clean each time seeds germinate.  This gradually uses up the w**d seed bank that the storm so generously refilled for us.

Soon I'll plant a late cover crop of cold hardy wheat, oats, peas, and clover to keep the soil covered for winter and build organic matter in the spring.

🔥 Whew, we love harvesting and seeing the bounty of our work, even when we sweat buckets and it runs into our eyes while bending down to pick peppers.
🧡But we really love it when everyone comes to market in the heat and we have record sales! Thank you for your enthusiasm and support for our farm! It makes the hot sweaty days a bit easier!☀️
