This week Meztli Projects hosted interns from the Getty Multicultural Undergraduate program who are supporting arts organizations in the eastern part of the county.

It was important to ground their internship journey at Kuruvungna Springs a Gabrielino/Tongva village site and one of few possibly the only running spring in the county. Interns learned about First Peoples and the history of resistance and current work to protect the springs.

We ended the day over at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (ICA LA) for a tour of their current exhibition Speaking in Tongues led by Senior Curator Amanda Sroka, featuring works by Raven Chacon candice hopkins iris 🩵👁️🌈🦋🩷 and others. The exhibition explores art as a spiritual tool for survival and connection.

On the evening of Sunday, June 21, celebrate the summer solstice with Fowler Museum at UCLA 🌞

The program will open with a screening of “Yáamay: An Ode to Blooming,” a lyrical short film highlighting the voices and lived experiences of contemporary California Indigenous women. Following the screening, join a conversation with co-directors Camaray Davalos and Casse Kíihut, along with poet and producer Avelaka Macarro.

The evening will continue in the Fowler Amphitheater with music and live performance by Genevra Munroa, Alexis Munroa, and Andrew Dyer, followed by poetry readings from Jessa Calderon and Solange Aguilar as the sun sets. Light refreshments will be served as we gather to honor land, light, and community.

No matter where you are at today end your evening with some laughs.

So make sure to catch Sage-Based Wisdom after the LA NDN Flea ends. The celebration continues with an evening comedy hour featuring Native comedians Jana Schmieding and Brian Bahe, along with special guest Memo Torres of L.A. Taco. The three will dole out their sage(and non-sage) wisdom to willing audience members.

Following the comedy show, stay for a live performance by Oglala Lakota musician-composer, Mato Wayuhi, who’ll round out the evening with impeccable vibes.

Please join us to help determine how 10% of the locally generated unrestricted revenues should be used to support alternatives to incarceration. Meztli Projects, along with many other organizations, helped get Measure J passed, which the Board of Supervisors approved in 2020.

Since the initial launch of CFCI Care Grants, nearly 400 grantee organizations across LA County have been awarded over $350 million to support their programs.

We need your help to ensure East LA is not left out again.
