Why You Should Never Have Taken That Prestigious Internship 06/17/2013

In today's economy students are becoming increasingly exploited. If not through tuition costs or other means it is through entry-level jobs disguised as unpaid internships. More and more graduates are expected to work for free to gain access to a better life; but is there really any better life to be had?

Not only this but also the use of adjuncts also broadens trends for the exploitation of our academic labor. The salary for which adjuncts are paid is nowhere near a livable wage. We're on a deadly path as our academic institutions are rotting from the inside out.

Why You Should Never Have Taken That Prestigious Internship Journalist and scholar Sarah Kendzior explains how a prestige economy predicated on unpaid internships is bankrupting America's future.

The Politics Behind the Move to Dismantle Wisconsin's United Council 05/24/2013

More on what is happening in Wisconsin and how it is a threat to democratic institutions that students created:

"Now, I don’t consider campus referenda sacrosanct, and I certainly think there’s something to be said for empowering student governments to control student activity fee money directly. I don’t have any objection in principle to a rule that would, for instance, grant a student government the authority to override a campus referendum under certain circumstances. And I certainly believe that state student associations have an obligation to maintain good relations with member student governments, too — it’s quite possible that some or all of the responsibility for the breakdown in the relationship between the Eau Claire student senate and statewide United Council leadership rests with UC.

But that’s not what’s happening here. What’s happening here is a state legislature and a student government seeking to destroy a democratically empowered and elected student association because they don’t like the outcomes of the democratic process that the university itself created."

The Politics Behind the Move to Dismantle Wisconsin's United Council Last night brought startling news for friends of student involvement in university governance in the United States, as a Republican-controlled budget committee of the Wisconsin state legislature mo...

Arizona's statewide student organization has already been defunded and thus "outlawed" this year. Once again a highly-conservative state sets a precedent on legislation and others follow suit.

These bills look as if they are modeled after "Right to Work" legislation. Workers can opt-out of paying dues. Even though the union protects workers, if they aren't funded [enough] they cease to function as-is.

This is clearly an attack on students and the aim is to prohibit them from organizing. It must be stopped.

"One week from today, hundreds of students will converge at the Sallie Mae Shareholder's meeting to oppose Sallie Mae's predatory student loan policies and lobbying efforts to defund public colleges and universities.

NJUS and NYSR are sending a few buses of students and allies. Buses will be leaving from locations across the state. If you want to join us in holding Sallie Mae accountable, sign up below to Get On the Bus!"

Get on the Bus! May 30th Sallie Mae Shareholder's Meeting We’ll introduce a shareholder resolution asking Sallie Mae to be more transparent and accountable about its lobbying efforts and executive bonus structure. We'll also be demanding that they cut their ties to the right-wing think tank ALEC, which has pushed privatization efforts at universities natio...

The First Couple’s Post-Racial Bootstraps Myth | The Nation 05/21/2013

"Graduation is often a time for inspiration, not attacks—although that may have been lost on the first couple. Still, neither Michelle Obama nor Barack Obama could possibly fail to grasp that their words echo beyond commencement services and to audiences far and wide. In that respect, the speeches they’ve shared were written for all of us, and perhaps for black youth in especially, who are at once being bombarded with insulting stereotypes, and being blamed for a reality they haven’t constructed or can easily benefit from."

The First Couple’s Post-Racial Bootstraps Myth | The Nation Michelle and Barack Obama’s troubling advice to black graduates includes some seriously worn-out stereotypes.
