It’s not rocket science (well, maybe in a red state).

If you thought I was going to stay quiet, you were wrong. You think this is as bad as it will get? You think it won’t actually touch you? That’s what all of those before us thought. Just wait until it’s you or your partner or your child. How can we tell our children to speak up? How can we tell them to be proud of telling the truth, defending the helpless, standing up for what’s right? How can we tell them these things when these are the very things leading to public ex ec utions? How can I look at my good and kind sons and tell them I hope they always speak up when they are face with injustice when I KNOW freedom of speech is just a pretty phrase we like to use now. When it’s only something you’re ALLOWED to use if you’re agreeing with the White House? Be angry. Please. Because being quiet puts THIS at risk. And yes. This is very much writing related because what do you think is the next thing to go? If “freedom of speech” isn’t free, why would we want a paper trail leading them right back to us?

Old school is the way

Gun violence is now the leading cause of death in children and teens in the U.S. Every day, kids are killed or injured — at home, at school, in their communities. This is not inevitable. There are practical, actionable steps each of us can take: 🔒 Secure fi****ms at home • Store guns locked, unloaded, with ammunition stored separately. • Ask about gun safety before playdates or sleepovers (“Is there an unlocked gun in the home?”). 📞 Advocate for stronger laws • Support background checks on all gun sales. • Encourage safe storage laws and red flag laws that prevent access during times of crisis. • Call or email your local representatives — your voice matters. 🧑‍🏫 Educate and normalize conversations • Talk with kids about gun safety in age-appropriate ways. • Normalize asking about safe storage like we ask about food allergies or car seats. 🤝 Support community programs • Donate or volunteer with violence interruption and youth mentorship programs. • Partner with local schools, hospitals, or nonprofits focused on preventing firearm injuries. 👂 Check in on those around you • Recognize that many gun deaths among kids are suicides. • Support mental health, reduce stigma, and ensure kids know where to turn for help. We all want children to grow up safe, healthy, and free to live their lives.
