Pharmaceutical fentanyl is a synthetic opioid pain reliever, approved for treating severe pain, typically advanced cancer pain.1 It is 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine. It is prescribed in the form of transdermal patches or lozenges and can be diverted for misuse and abuse in the United States.

However, most recent cases of fentanyl-related harm, overdose, and death in the U.S. are linked to illegally made fentanyl. It is sold through illegal drug markets for its he**in-like effect. It is often mixed with he**in and/or co***ne as a combination product—with or without the user’s knowledge—to increase its euphoric effects. https://www.cdc.gov/drugoverdose/pdf/pbss/PBSS-Report-072017.pdf

How is he**in harmful? He**in is an illegal, highly addictive opioid drug. A he**in overdose can cause slow and shallow breathing, coma, and death. People often use he**in along with other drugs or alcohol. This practice is especially dangerous because it increases the risk of overdose.

He**in is typically injected but is also smoked and snorted. When people inject he**in, they are at risk of serious, long-term viral infections such as HIV, Hepatitis C, and Hepatitis B, as well as bacterial infections of the skin, bloodstream, and heart.

Synthetic opioids are a class of drugs that are designed to provide pain relief, mimicking naturally occurring opioids such as codeine and morphine. They tend to be highly potent, which means only a small amount of the drug is required to produce a given effect. They include drugs like tramadol and fentanyl. Methadone is also a synthetic opioid. Although synthetic opioids are manufactured by pharmaceutical companies, they are also manufactured illegally in clandestine labs and distributed through the illicit drug market. Scientists are still learning more about how e-cigarettes affect health. However, there is already enough evidence to justify efforts to prevent e-cigarette use by young people.

Because most to***co use starts during adolescence, actions to protect our nation's young people from a lifetime of ni****ne addiction are critical.

Working together, we can keep America's youth and young adults safe from the dangers associated with to***co use and ni****ne addiction. **e **ng
