We often get asked, if there is no cure, what can be done?

Be patient and listen to the message, not how the message was delivered. Give those who stutter the space to say what they want because they know what they want to say.

Speech therapy can be beneficial to target overall communication skills and communication effectiveness. Therapy can help with desensitization to stuttering and listener reactions, resilience, advocacy, and education.

Stuttering support groups offer a safe place for connection, understanding, and shared experiences. The National Stuttering Association’s (NSA) vision is a world where those who stutter are met with understanding, supported by community, and never alone.

There are SO MANY myths out there about stuttering and we wanted to talk about a few of them during National Stuttering Awareness Week.

MYTHS:
Bilingualism causes stuttering
🚫NOT TRUE
Stuttering is a habit
🚫NOT TRUE
Stuttering is caused by nervousness
🚫NOT TRUE

What myths do you wish people would understand are NOT true?

Should we avoid the topic of stuttering with kids? The short answer is no.🚫

Talking about stuttering is helpful. Confusion and shame can increase when the topic is avoided. When adults speak openly and neutrally about stuttering, children learn that it is acceptable to talk about how they feel and to stutter without fear.

It’s National Stuttering Awareness Week!

We know so much more about stuttering now than we ever have, but there are still so many myths and misconceptions surrounding stuttering. This week gives us the opportunity to increase awareness and advocate for the stuttering community.

We hope you join us in spreading acceptance and facts this week and throughout the year!

There are moments that don’t neatly stay in the past. They shape how you carry yourself as a clinician. We’re offering a space for SLPs who want time to reflect on their practice with people who stutter, especially when earlier training emphasized fluency in ways that may not fully align with where you are now.

This is a facilitated, non-recorded session to explore what it means to grow in clinical practice and reconnect with care that centers the whole person who stutters (not just the speech). SLPs Mandy Rodstrom and Nicole Terhune will guide the conversation for reflection and shared experience.
