Fantastic graphic showing material flow at the cutting edge of a lathe insert. Note that it's a separation action rather than a shearing action, and that the chip exiting the top of the graphic would look like a stack of layers, rather than a ribbon. If you look at chips with a loupe you will see this. Also pay attention to the tool tip. As the adhesion to the tip builds up and breaks away, it takes small bites of the insert surface with it, cause the pitting you see in normal wear. It's a metallic cavitation process. This is so cool.
