What You Need to Know About Prostate Cancer Testing | Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois 06/03/2026

๐Ÿ’™ Prostate Cancer Awareness & Screening ๐Ÿ’™

Prostate cancer is the most common non-skin cancer among American men. Deciding when to get screened isn't always straightforward, which is why it's important to have a conversation with your doctor about what's right for you.

๐Ÿ“Œ Screening Recommendations
โ€ข Men ages 55-69 should discuss the benefits and risks of screening with their doctor.
โ€ข Routine screening is generally not recommended for men age 70 and older.
โ€ข These recommendations apply to all men without symptoms, including those at higher risk, such as African American men and men with a family history of prostate cancer.

โš ๏ธ Possible Symptoms of Prostate Cancer
โ€ข Difficulty starting or stopping urination
โ€ข Frequent urination, especially at night
โ€ข Urgent need to urinate
โ€ข Reduced urine flow
โ€ข Burning during urination
โ€ข Chills or fever
โ€ข Lower back, groin, or pelvic pain
โ€ข Sexual problems or decreased s*x drive

If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, talk to your healthcare provider.

๐Ÿ” Understanding PSA Testing
The most common screening test is the PSA (Prostate-Specific Antigen) blood test. While PSA testing can help detect cancer early, it's important to understand that:
โ€ข Elevated PSA levels can occur for reasons other than cancer.
โ€ข Some prostate cancers may not cause elevated PSA levels.
โ€ข Follow-up testing can be stressful, invasive, and costly.
โ€ข Some prostate cancers grow so slowly that treatment may never be necessary.

Discuss the potential benefits and risks with your doctor to make an informed decision.

๐Ÿฅ— Can You Lower Your Risk?
While factors such as age, family history, and ethnicity can't be changed, healthy lifestyle choices may help reduce your risk:

โœ… Maintain a healthy weight
โœ… Stay physically active
โœ… Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains
โœ… Limit red and processed meats
โœ… Reduce sugary drinks and highly processed foods

๐Ÿ‘จโ€โš•๏ธ Early conversations can lead to informed decisions. If you're in the recommended age range or have risk factors, consider talking with your doctor about prostate cancer screening.

Weโ€™re proud to be a sponsor of the Mokena 159 3rd Annual Color Run!

Itโ€™s been incredible to see this event grow year after year and to watch so many students and families come together for such a fun, high-energy kickoff to summer. From the color, to the music, to the excitement on the kidsโ€™ facesโ€”itโ€™s a reminder of how special community events like this can be.

This is the PTAโ€™s largest fundraiser of the year, and funds help provide student experiences throughout the year.

Weโ€™re grateful for the opportunity to support Mokena PTA, and we appreciate all the families, volunteers, and sponsors who helped make this yearโ€™s event such a success.

Great Reminder from our friends at Mokena Police Department

Important Notice: Metropolitan Alliance of Police Solicitation Calls

Many residents and business owners may be receiving solicitation phone calls asking for a financial donation to, what they interpret to be, the Mokena Police Department. When these solicitors call, please listen carefully to the caller. The Mokena Police Department does not solicit monetary donations. Any donations made will not benefit the operations of the Mokena Police Department. Operations for the Police Department are funded through tax dollars. The union representing the officers of the Mokena Police Department, the Metropolitan Alliance of Police, will be making these solicitation calls. Any donation will go to that union. Additionally, any donation made will not have an effect (either positive or negative) on the service delivery of the Mokena Police Department.

The union is allowed to solicit for funds and must legally represent themselves during the phone conversation. However, many residents and business owners have voiced confusion and concern over these calls in the past. If you receive a call and are confused, ask the caller what a donation would fund and what organization would receive it. Anyone with questions or concerns should contact Chief Brian Benton at the Mokena Police Department at (708) 479-3912.

Great topicโ€”GAP coverage!

GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) helps cover the difference between what you owe on your car and what itโ€™s worth if itโ€™s totaled or stolen. Itโ€™s almost always more affordable to add it through your car insurance than to roll it into your auto loan.

Have questions about GAP coverage? Drop them belowโ€”weโ€™re happy to help!

EDUCATE YOURSELF ON - GAP - it is not insurance unless you get it from an insurance company. If you get it from a car dealership itโ€™s a financial service NOT PROTECTED by insurance regulations. GAP in all cases only โ€œKicks inโ€ if the insurance company pays you fairly. It doesnโ€™t automatically cover any amount of short payment.

GAP coverage (Guaranteed Asset Protection) is generally treated as an insurance-type product, but thereโ€™s a wrinkle that matters.

What it is:
GAP covers the difference (โ€œgapโ€) between what you owe on a car loan/lease and what the car is actually worth (actual cash value) if itโ€™s totaled or stolen.

Why the confusion:

* When you buy GAP through an auto insurer (like Progressive or State Farm), it is insuranceโ€”regulated like any other auto coverage.
* When you buy it through a dealership or lender, itโ€™s often structured as a waiver or add-on contract, not technically โ€œinsurance,โ€ even though it works similarly.

Bottom line:

* Functionally: it protects you financially after a total loss.
* Legally: it can be insurance or a contractual waiver, depending on who sells it.

Significant severe weather possible Mondayโ€”stay alert and be prepared, friends!

**Significant severe weather potential Monday**

Monday has the potential to be significant for severe weather in the region. A powerful storm system will bring in a warm, moist and very unstable environment. A trailing cold front will interact with this and ignite storms in the region.

Storms will initially start discrete with all hazards including strong tornadoes, favored in western parts of IL.

These will grow quickly into a line of severe thunderstorms then race east through the state. Widespread damaging winds up to 80MPH and tornadoes will be possible with this line. Timing is 12PM-11PM for everything.

We urge everyone to be aware of this and prepare.

For those with storm anxiety, please be aware and know things will change. Avoid pages using big rhetoric and not explaining the details.
